Soon after the death of Paul Walker, a famous actor from the Fast and Furious movie series, almost all the leading social networking sites flooded with condolences. However, the one social networking website that showed a huge grief was Facebook. Millions of active users updated their sympathy messages on their profiles. But, people unable to make out how to respond to each other’s grief statuses, began liking the condolences messages.

This is when Mark Zukersberg, CEO, Facebook (may be a diehard fan of Paul Walker), struck with an idea of implementing a “Sympathy” button on the Facebook. It seems that Zukersberg was very much depressed by the “likes” Paul Walker’s RIP messages were getting. Jokes apart, according to Huffington Post, during a Facebook hackathon held a little while back, an engineer devised a “Sympathize” button to respond to the gloomier status updates.

The long-coveted “Dislike” button never made its way on Facebook since it had several negative aspects associated with it. It was one smart decision taken by the Facebook engineers not to implement the dislike button as it could have created a real mess as well as psychological issues amongst the users. For example: Imagine you posting a picture of you with your hubby and end up getting 100 dislikes for the image.

However, after giving a thought to the overuse of like button and a serious requirement to get its substitute to handle the gloomier status messages, a “Sympathize” button will really work well in this case. Many a time its seen that people share their grief on Facebook and the ebuddies present there are unable to do anything except from entering some sad emoticons. At the similar time, most of the people end up liking the post which can be misconstrue that you’re laughing at their loss or misfortune.

To overcome such complicated issues over the Facebook, the organization is thinking to come up with the “Sympathize” button. However, even the “Sympathize” button being a part of Facebook hackathon, introducing it immediately on the social networking site is bit skeptical. Facebook will definitely go for a detailed research on how it should be presented.

No doubt, the “Sympathize” button is going to have both negative as well as positive aspects associated with it. So, let’s hope that even if this button appears, people don’t overuse it.

Do you think that that the pipelined “Sympathize” button will help Facebook in increasing the user interface?
